PhenomeGene — Human Disease Gene Website SeriesARFGEF1

Molecular characteristics

The ARFGEF1 gene gives instructions for making a protein that plays an important role in brain development. In this condition, a single change in the gene can reduce how much of the protein is made, which affects brain function.

Most of the changes found in children so far are small changes in the gene’s code. These changes can be identified using modern genetic tests, such as exome or genome sequencing.
