Several mutations in CITgene as an underlying cause of MCPH1 have been identified. This include homozygous and compound heterozygous mutations. CIT encodes citron kinase enzyme. Citron kinase is essential for cytokinesis. Mutations in this enzyme lead to defective neurogenesis.
