Summary
Pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) is a group of rare brain disorders that mostly affect the parts of the brain that control movement and help send signals through the body. PCH1 is one of 11 known types of PCH, and PCH1B is a more specific form of PCH1.

Clinical features

This condition usually starts at birth and causes progressive problems with the nervous system, often leading to serious health issues during infancy. However, recent studies show that some children with milder symptoms can grow up and live past infancy, even into adulthood. Common signs include trouble with balance, walking, speaking, and using their hands for small movements.

Prevalence
Because this disorder is so rare, we don't know exactly how many people are affected overall. However, doctors and researchers have reported over 82 known cases from 58 different families in the medical literature.

Inheritance
PCH1B is caused by changes in both copies of a gene called EXOSC3, which are passed down from each parent. This condition is inherited in a way where a child must get the faulty gene from both parents to be affected.
