Management

Because conditions linked to FEM1C were only recently discovered (the first case was reported in 2023), there aren’t yet any specific guidelines for treating or monitoring these disorders. Each individual’s care plan must be tailored to their personal situation, and may include:

• Working with multiple specialists (for example, physical, occupational, and speech therapists) to help address delays in learning new skills.
• Managing symptoms like muscle tightness (spasticity) and coordination problems (ataxia) through medications or equipment recommended by healthcare providers.
• Scheduling regular neurologic checkups to keep track of how the condition progresses and to adjust treatments as needed.
• Using genetic tests and counseling to help families understand whether FEM1C changes might be passed on and to discuss the implications for the child and other relatives.

As doctors and researchers learn more about FEM1C through new cases, they will be able to develop clearer advice on treatments, follow-up care, and other aspects of managing these conditions.
