Lipoic acid (LA) supplementation has been speculated as a potential treatment for these patients, but eukaryotic cells cannot use exogenously supplied LA for lipoylation of target enzymes. Therefore, at present, no specific treatment is available, and the management of the disease remains purely supportive.
