Changes in the PRRT2 gene, which makes a protein that helps with brain function, are found to be the main genetic reason for certain types of epilepsy in babies (known as BFIS) and for a condition called paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD), where people have sudden movement problems. These disorders are considered relatively rare, but they can happen in different groups of people. It’s estimated that PKD affects about 1 in every 100,000 people.
