PhenomeGene — Human Disease Gene Website SeriesRPS6KC1

Molecular characteristics

When the RPS6KC1 protein doesn’t work properly, it causes widespread problems in how cells function across the body. Think of it like a key control system breaking down, affecting several important processes at once:

1. Problems making proteins:Cells normally build proteins using tiny structures called ribosomes. When RPS6KC1 isn’t working, cells struggle to make the proteins they need to function.

2. Slowed-down cell growth signals: There are important communication pathways (like “growth signals”) inside cells that tell them when to grow and how to use energy. In this condition, these are less active, affecting how cells grow and develop, whereas in the brain, this can lead to learning difficulties and structural changes

3. Misplacement of important protective proteins:RPS6KC1 normally helps guiding certain proteins to the right place inside the cell. When RPS6KC1 is not working, some proteins end up in the wrong location, their levels drop and cells become more vulnerable to damage (especially from oxidative stress)

4. Problems handling fats (lipids):Cells rely on fats for structure, energy, and signaling. When RPS6KC1 fails: fat-related molecules become unbalanced, cholesterol and triglycerides can increase, key regulators of fat production don’t activate properly.

5. Changes in mitochondria (the cell’s energy producers):They fuse together into larger structures, there are fewer separate mitochondria and may not work efficiently.

6. Faulty “quality control” for genetic messages:Cells may produce abnormal or harmful proteins.
