Management

There is currently no cure for UBE3B-related disorder. However, many treatments and types of support can help manage symptoms and improve your child's comfort and quality of life.

Key areas of care:
•    Feeding and growth support: some children need extra feeding support, including a feeding tube in some cases
•    Developmental therapies:physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech/communication support
•    Seizure control: regular follow-up with your child's neurologist if seizures occur; medication is usually effective
•    Eye and hearing check-ups: regular assessments to catch and manage vision or hearing problems early
•    Heart monitoring: an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) at diagnosis, with follow-up as needed
•    Breathing support: specialist review if your child has noisy or labored breathing
•    Kidney monitoring: periodic check-ups, even if your child seems well

Early and ongoing involvement of a multidisciplinary team gives your child the best chance of comfortable, well-supported care.

Genetic counselling:
Because UBE3B-related disorder is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, genetic counselling is recommended for parents to discuss the 25% chance of having another affected child in future pregnancies, as well as options such as testing relatives, prenatal testing, and preimplantation genetic testing (testing embryos created through IVF before pregnancy), once the specific gene change in the family is known.
