PhenomeGene — Human Disease Gene Website SeriesPRRT2

Molecular characteristics

The PRRT2 gene makes a protein called proline-rich transmembrane Protein 2. This gene is found on chromosome 16 in humans. The PRRT2 protein is thought to help with how brain cells communicate with each other by releasing chemicals called neurotransmitters. It may also play a role in managing calcium levels and moving tiny packages (called vesicles) that carry these chemicals between nerve cells. Scientists are still researching exactly how this protein works, but it seems to be important for sending signals in the brain.
